April ArtHop Fresno High School International Baccalaureate Program
Three students in the Fresno High School International Baccalaureate (IB) program will exhibit their artwork during the month of April at the African American Museum, 1857 Fulton Street. Charles Curry, Leslie Vllanueva and Erik Castro have worked on their year-long IB art project by researching the works of other artists, studying various art mediums, and developing a theme that is displayed in their art work. The students each have 12 pieces on exhibit that will be critiqued and graded at three levels in th IB program, along with their sketchbooks. Martha Roberts is the art teacher at Fresno High that teaches and oversees the IB art program.Charles Curry, a senior at the advanced level in art, was selected to exhibit his artwork at the 2007 Fresno County High Schools Art Exhibit at the Fresno Fair. the focus of his collection is the effects of light. He studied the effects of contrasts from concert lighting, and uses color to correlate moods of light and music. The majority of his work is in oil paint.
The emphasis of Leslie Villanueva's portfolio is expressive emotions. He sets the mood through color and composition of figures. He discovered an atypical use of color using acrylics, focusing on techniques rather than detail to create a surrealist depiction of figures.
The Fresno High IB student artwork can be seen at the African American Museum from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday throughout April. Photographs of the exhibit are not allowed. A reception for the artists will be held at the museum later in the month. The community is encouraged to visit the exhibit and support the talents of our local youth.
