15th Annual Men Who Cook at FAM

Men Who Cook is Fresno Art Museum’s annual fundraiser where more 75 men are invited to cook their favorite and specialty dishes for hundreds of people. Contestants are to form a team composed of 3 chefs who will be responsible in creating up a dish that will be enough to tease the taste buds of 250 people. To add up to the challenge, each team’s table must be self-sufficient: meaning no electricity is provided upon presentation, and a secure location with a shade is not guaranteed.

Now, this event is not just for cooks. Foodies and food critiques are invited to taste and vote using three (3) voting tickets provided by FAM. To vote, simply place the tickets inside the buckets of your favorite team – or teams. It can be tough to choose among the 75 amazing dishes that are presented in the most enticing and entertaining manner imaginable, so take your time. Mix, mingle, network, and enjoy live musical performances as you sip cool refreshments under the afternoon summer sun while you decide which team or teams deserve your precious tickets.

The 5th Annual Men Who Cook will be on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Fresno Arts Museum located in 2233 N. First Street, Fresno, CA 93703 from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Kids’ Summer Fun with California Arts Academy

The California Arts Academy is having two fun-filled summer camps for children who are looking for something interesting and different this summer.

First of CAA’s summer camps is the Summer Talent Team. Children who just love to be on center stage and perform for an audience will surely have a blast as they form their own Talent Team supervised by trained and experienced CAA staff. The Talent Team will go through different subjects such as the arts, stagecraft, dance, gym, acting, singing, and even music.

Summer Arts Camp marks the 10th year of CAA’s summer fun. Exposing kids at an early age to the arts enhances their communication skills as well as their ability to express themselves. Be assured that your children will learn while enjoying a fun and nurturing environment as they learn how to be "cool kind kids."

Summer Talent Team is for children ages 7-13, and the Summer Arts Camp is for tiny tots aged 3-6 years old. Both camps are held in three 2-week sessions from June 18-August 3, 2012 during Mondays-Fridays at 8:30am-12:00pm. Exclusive Master Class At CMT

CMT is proud to announce that Sam Willmott and Marcus Stevens (the creators of Yo, Vikings!) will host an exclusive master class on March 2, 2012.

The master class gives students the rare opportunity to get valuable pointers as well as guidance from these two professionals. However, the first ten students ages 12 and above who sign up are the only ones to get the chance to sing for Sam and Marcus.

Registration for the first participating students is $30, with classes held at the Sierra Vista Mall. Students must come with a song of their choice. Pottery Class with Craig Easter at Clay Mix

Clay Mix is having two pottery classes for pottery enthusiasts of all levels, both under the guidance of ceramic artist Craig Easter.

Wheel Throwing Class

This class will teach students how to work with clay using a potter’s wheel. This is a mixed class where beginners can learn the basics of throwing and trimming clay, and advanced students are exposed to new techniques based on their interest and preference as they work at their own pace.

New! Wheel Throwing Challenge with Craig Easter

This class is created for advanced students and potters who are after new challenges in wheel-throwing to improve their style and creativity. The class will concentrate on a specific theme that is changed every two weeks, with each week ending with a group critique. Students will do some outside studio work and research, and participants of the class must have a solid foundation of throwing skills before signing up.

Wheel Throwing class runs from March 6, 2012-April 4, 2012 every Tuesdays, with afternoon and evening classes. Wheel Throwing Challenge will be every Wednesday evening from March 7, 2012-April 25, 2012.

Fresno International Youth Orchestra Festival

The Youth Orchestras of Fresno cordially invites everyone to come and be part of the Fresno International Youth Orchestra Festival.

Qualified musicians will have the chance to play with over 120 young musicians from different parts of the world, as well as from California’s Central Valley. Each will be given the opportunity to play Shostakovich Symphony No. 11 and work with exceptional international faculty. Musicians can also enjoy relaxing breaks by visiting local attractions like Yosemite National park in between rehearsals, and experience Central Valley hospitality through home stays with other young musicians and their families.

As the host of the Festival, Youth Orchestras of Fresno is hereby calling all qualified musicians ages 16-25 to send their application and audition materials. Applicants can be individual musicians or members of a youth ensemble who play string instruments, and there’s a limited slot for exceptional wind and brass players as well.

Dr. Thomas Loewenheim will be the music director for the Festival, and he’s accepting the participants for the following categories:

10 Violins
4-6 Violas
4-5 Cellos
1-2 Basses
1-2 Oboes (English horn)
1-2 Bassoons
1-2 Trumpets
1-2 French Horns (transposition frequency required)

Application and audition materials must be given by February 15, 2012.

First and foremost, Fresno Filmworks would like to thank all their loyal patrons and supporters. Your help is instrumental in driving the organization to prepare for the upcoming 2012 season.

Fresno Filmworks is currently struggling through tough times. The organization is able to operate from donations of individuals, businesses and other organizations, with a majority of its funding coming from the Fresno Arts Council Community Enrichment Grant. Fresno Filmworks has been a gracious recipient of FAC CEP throughout the years, but the grant has now run out.

The organization has been entertaining us throughout the years with exceptional indie films that delight and inspire audiences of different ages. For January, Fresno Filmworks will feature Urbanized and Duck Soup in the historic Tower Theatre. As an individual, you can offer help by buying tickets for you, your friends, or family to watch these films, plus other Filmworks shows in the future.

Please help keep Fresno Filmworks alive by making a tax-deductible donation by mail or through the Fresno Filmworks website. With your help, Fresno Filmworks will be able to push through with their 2012 season.

Chesapeake at the Broken Leg Stage

Chesapeake is a one-man comedy of two acts presented by {the new ensamble} featuring {tne’s} very own James Sherrill as Kerr.

LEGO® Robotics class at The Discovery Center

Building robots is a fun learning experience, and that’s what The Discovery Center is aiming for with their (LEGO®) Robotics class.

Children ages 10-14 are introduced to the basics of building a robot with the use of LEGO®'s Mindstorms® kit. They are grouped into teams and collaborate in building a robot that can pick up objects, run around through obstacles, and possibly even differentiate between red and blue colors. At the end of the camp, the kids will have the chance to create a single robot that can do all of that at the same time!

The kids meet twice a week, with one day dedicated to brainstorming about how to build and design their robot for the week’s task. Subjects for the class include:

Intro to Robots and Programming - kids will get to control a robot and will be exposed to basic computer programming.
Bumper Car - robots are created to bump into an obstacle and move around it.
Avoid Obstacles – kids will utilize the Ultrasonic Sensor that the Mindstorms® robot uses to “see” and program the robot to avoid obstacles.
Follow a Line – robots can’t chase a ball, but they can very well see light and dark. Children will create a robot that can follow a dark line that goes around in a circle.
Lifting – robots are not fun if they just run around. Kids will help build a robot that can lift a small tray on top of a stack of books
Stop at a Color –By playing with the robot’s programming, children will teach their robot to follow a pattern of colors in order to reach a goal.
Follow a Color and Pick Up – now that the robot is able to distinguish color, the goal is to have it go to a color-coordinated path and lift an object located at the end.
Student’s Project – a day made especially to unleash the children’s creativity in making a robot that can do one special task, or a combination of two or more.

Classes are held twice a week, Mondays and Wednesdays beginning January 15, 2011 up to February 29. 2011. Registration is for $80 per child. The Children's Musical Theaterworks is having auditions for its brand new musical Yo, Vikings!

Yo, Vikings is based on the same-titled book by Judy Schachner. The story is about a Emma Katz, a young girl with a vivid imagination. Each day is an adventure for Emma, and she makes absolutely sure to dress for the part. Little did Emma know that an even bigger adventure awaits her at the School library. Together with her brother Ollie, Emma starts her quest to save the library and have herself a real Viking ship.

Broadway musical My Fair Lady is visiting in Fresno this January!

My Fair Lady Fresno Tour is presented by Big League Productions Inc. in cooperation with Broadway in Fresno. The story is based on Shaw’s play and Pascal’s movie “Pygmalion,” with music and Lyrics by Lerner and Loewe. Hit songs include:

My Fair Lady was a smash hit in 1956 and had set the record then as the longest running major musical in history. Original cast were Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins. It has seen several Broadway versions, along with the most famous London film starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

My Fair Lady is a story of how Cockney flower girl Eliza is transformed into a well-bred, well-spoken lady by Henry Higgins. This “quest” was all because of a bet between Higgins and his linguist friend Colonel Pickering, who said that Higgins cannot change Eliza’s dreadful street accent and manners in time for the Embassy Ball.

1st Annual Fresno Playwright’s Festival

The Underground @ CMT is holding its first Annual Fresno Playwright’s Festival in July 27-28, 2012.

The Underground @ CMT serves as an outlet for Children’s Musical Theaterworks’ older performers. The Underground will be the performers’ avenue for unleashing artistic talents and take bold risks in producing new creative works that they won’t be able to do during CMT’S Mainstage season. One (1) production each year will be created for performers 18 years old and above.

Starting July next year, The Underground @ CMT will host the Fresno Playwright’s Festival, a yearly event dedicated for the development of new plays and musical. Each work featured will help Central Valley audiences learn what goes on behind the scenes of play production.

“The Underground @ CMT is an innovative branch for CMT to expand its artistic development and provide the Central Valley with new and exciting theatre. “

November Food Drive by Fresno Philharmonic

The Holidays is all about giving support to those in need. For the month of November, the Fresno Philharmonic is having its 2011 Food Drive to support the food insecure. You can help by bringing non-perishable food items during the Shubert’s Great Symphony concert on November 19 & 20 showing at 8:00pm and 2:30pm respectively. Doors open 1.5 hours before each concert to accommodate collection of goods.
